Attach a "So What" Before You Dive In

Personal relevance is one of the strongest RAS triggers there is. When your brain believes information connects to you, it gets flagged as high-priority almost automatically.
Introduce Controlled Novelty
Your brain is a novelty-seeking machine. New environments, new formats, new approaches — all of these nudge the RAS into a more alert state. If you've been reading the same textbook in the same chair for three weeks, try rewriting the same content in a completely different format. Draw it. Teach it to your dog. Record a 90-second voice memo explaining it like you're a podcast host.
The shift in format introduces just enough novelty to re-engage the RAS without overwhelming your working memory.
The Role of Sleep (Yes, Again)
Here's where it gets even more interesting. Even if you successfully flag information as important during your study session, the brain still needs to consolidate it — and that process happens largely during sleep, particularly during slow-wave and REM cycles.
But here's the catch: your brain consolidates what it has already flagged as meaningful. If the RAS never tagged the material as worth keeping, there's nothing for your sleeping brain to consolidate. The filing cabinet stays empty.
This means the six-second window at the start of your study session has downstream consequences all the way to how much you actually remember on Friday's exam. The priming you do before you read matters more than how long you study.
Putting It All Together
